Project status challenges
Most measures of project status are based on time and cost. These give you a view of the resource usage of the project, but lack any relationship to value delivery, making it difficult to prioritise and plan. It's important to know when part-way through a project (from a time and cost perspective) how the project is delivering against business objectives and how to quantify those objectives into measurable project characteristics.
Are we there yet?
If you are driving from A to B it's useful to know how many miles you've driven and how much fuel you've used, but you also need to be confident you are heading in the right direction, what proportion of the total journey has been achieved, and the progress towards that goal.
Lack of visibility of true project status is a key problem for many project sponsors. Mismatches between the business requirements and delivered software value are caught late, and ongoing prioritisation decisions are difficult to make as they are based on insufficient information.
